Private James D. Mardis, 4th GGF of John B. Carberry, was born in Franklin, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in 1819.  James enlisted in the Union Army on 24 Jul 1861 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for a period of three years.  According to his enlistment records, he was 42 years old, stood 5' 6” tall, had grey eyes, sandy hair, a dark complexion, and resided in Westmoreland County.  James mustered into service on 10 Aug 1861 at Camp Curtain and fought in the Civil War with Company H, 41st Pennsylvania Infantry (12th Reserves).  He mustered out of service at Harrisburg, PA on 11 Jun 1864.  James' brother, David Mardis, served in the Union Army with Company I, 135th PA Infantry at Chancellorsville.


During their term of service with the 41st PA Infantry (12th Reserves), James and his fellow soldiers fought in the following battles:

·     12-15 Dec 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA.

·     20 to 24 Jan 1863 Mud March, Fredericksburg, VA.
