Corporal James “Jas” Bollinger (Bolinger, Ballinger), 3rd GGF of John Carberry, was born in Pennsylvania on 27 Sep 1835. James enlisted in the Union Army in Blair County, Pennsylvania on 16 Oct 1861, when he was 26 years old. James mustered into service the next day on 17 Oct 1861 with Company C, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. While James was assigned to the 53rd PA Regt, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Army Corps, he was engaged in the following campaigns and battles:
· The Peninsula Campaign
· South Mountain
· Antietam
· Fredericksburg
o Right Grand Division at Marye's Heights.
· Chancellorsville
· Gettysburg Campaign
After completion of service with the 53rd PA Infantry, James enlisted in Company L, 19th Pennsylvania Cavalry (180th Regiment) and mustered into service on 17 Sep 1863. The 19th PA Cavalry conducted military operations across the western theater and participated in the Battle of Nashville 15 to 16 Dec 1864. The 19th moved into Louisiana on 08 Feb 1865, occupying various cities across the state until the regiment was mustered out of service on 14 May 1866.
James Bollinger died on 08 Nov 1905 and is buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Yellow Creek, Bedford County, PA.
